Find Your Formula
The right lubricant depends on what you are using it with and which texture you prefer. Start with compatibility, then compare the formula, ingredients and label instructions.
Water-based lubricant
Water-based lubricants are a common choice for toy use and are usually straightforward to rinse away. Textures vary from thinner liquids to thicker gels. They may need reapplication; follow the label rather than assuming every formula feels the same.
Silicone-based lubricant
Silicone-based lubricants offer a different texture and often a longer-lasting glide. They can damage some silicone toys, so check compatibility before use. A lubricant’s base does not establish every ingredient or intended use.
Specialty formulas
Flavored lubricants and anal lubricants have different intended uses and ingredients. Read the label carefully. Avoid choosing a numbing formula to push through discomfort; pain is a reason to pause. Products marketed for massage or body care are not automatically personal lubricants.
A compatibility checklist
- Match the lubricant to the toy material and manufacturer’s instructions.
- For latex condoms, use a compatible water-based or silicone-based formula; avoid oil-based products.
- Read ingredient lists and any allergy or sensitivity information.
- Check intended use, expiry date and storage instructions.
- If irritation occurs, stop using the product.
